Nicky Byrne addresses Westlife reunion rumours

Nicky Byrne has set the record straight on those Westlife reunion rumours.

There was speculation recently that the band were getting back together, so EVOKE.ie sat down with Nicky to get the inside scoop.

Firstly, it appears that there are no immediate plans for Nicky to rejoin Kian Egan, Mark Feehily and Shane Filan on stage.

‘There is no truth in it! The thing about it is the four of us haven’t been in a room together since Jodi’s [Kian’s wife] mum’s funeral,’ he said.

‘That was the last time we spoke properly as a band, if you want to call it that.’

But there was some good news for fans of the boyband as Nicky was enthusiastic about the idea of the boys getting back together at some point.

‘I’d love to do a Westlife reunion as I hope would the other lads,’ the 2FM presenter said.

‘I wouldn’t love to do it now as I’ve got so much going on and I’m sure the other boys are the same.

‘So until we sit in a room and say what to you want to do? We don’t have a record deal but I’ve already heard labels that are interested.’

‘But we have discuss what kind of music we want to make. A big Westlife ballad, where does that sit with the current songs on radio? Where do we fit?

‘Not that we can’t fit, you look at Take That, they come out with great songs. That’s what I feel we would need to do.

‘I’d love to see all the fans again. I’d need to consider what would happen to the radio, can I take a sabbatical.’

‘I don’t know if we know when the right time for a reunion would be,’ the Dancing with the Stars host admitted.

‘I’d love to put a DVD on of a Westlife show with the four of us and have a few beers and laugh in a good way or what it used to be like!’

Nicky was chatting to us at the National Maternity Hospital Foundation coffee morning at Holles Street to celebrate World Prematurity Day on Friday 17th November 2017 supported by WaterWipes.

Drogheda based Irish Company WaterWipes has produced special “donate packs” for Prematurity Awareness Month. For every 60 pack sold, WaterWipes will donate 50c to the NMH Foundation and this will add to the total donation of €40,000 WaterWipes will make this year.

Singer Nicky Byrne shares heartbreaking story of birth of premature twins

Singer Nicky Byrne and his wife Georgina have opened up to EVOKE.ie about the birth of their premature twins ten years ago.

The couple welcomed fraternal twins Jay and Rocco in April 2007.

‘Ten and half years ago our world was thrown into chaos,’ he said. ‘Georgina was pregnant with twins and I was on a tour at the time.’

‘We’d just finished the European and UK legs of it and we were about to do a long run in the old Point Depot.

‘Georgina had two months plus to go on her pregnancy and she went in [to Holles St] for observation and they showed us around Unit 8. And we just thought they were giving us a tour.’

‘Georgina called me about 6am that morning and said “I’m in labour” and the twins were born about 9 that morning.’

But they were born 8 weeks and 2 days premature. They were in Unit 8, which is ICU.

‘They were in incubators. There was nothing we could do, Georgina was in recovery, the show must go on.

‘So I went and did the gig and that was our life then for six weeks, in and out.’

‘Nothing prepares you for that. We were both brokenhearted. Georgina would go home and express and then we’d bring the milk in and feed the boys.

‘They were weighed every night and they can’t really leave the hospital until they are over five pounds so Rocco was 2 pound 13 when he was born and Jay was 3 pound 11.

‘I think they were four or five weeks in hospital and we got Jay home first. And then a week later we got a phonecall to say Rocco was ready.

‘We went in together to get him and I got done for speeding on the way in!’

‘It was an amazingly tough time. When I was in there I met parents from all over the country who had nowhere to stay and slept in cars.

The boys are great now. They didn’t have any problems thankfully. They put on weight very quickly.’

Nicky Byrne says Dancing With The Stars was ‘Big Win For Him’

Nicky Byrne has admitted that hosting Dancing With The Stars was a “massive win” for him as a presenter.

The singer has gone on to establish a successful career as a radio host and TV presenter since Westlife split, but landing a co-hosting role on RTÉ’s Dancing With The Stars was his biggest presenting gig to date, and Nicky went down a hit with viewers.

Nicky previously hosted TV shows like The Hit and Million Euro Challenge, but neither have come close to the success of Ireland’s very first Dancing With The Stars.

“I think I needed this to be honest – as a host, for me personally,” he told the Irish Mirror.

“It’s been a win for everyone but it has been a massive one for me. And for Amanda too.

“Everyone I’ve met has spoken about it positively and it’s great. I’ve done a few little things, a few big things and I’ve joked about, ‘Please give me a format that I don’t have to explain’.

“Thankfully this was just me enjoying myself and being as natural as possible, along with having the guys back, because I’ve done Strictly before,” he said.

GAA star Aidan O’Mahony was crowned the winner of Dancing With The Stars on Sunday night, which upset many viewers as finalists Aoibhin Garrihy and Denise McCormack were favourites to win from week one.

Despite the criticism, Nicky has insisted that Aidan deserved to win as he’s “been on a journey”.

“It’s a public vote – it is what it is. Aidan won because most people voted for him, end of.

“I think they’re all winners but Aidan has been on the journey. He started off and we probably wouldn’t have predicted him to be the winner in the beginning.

“He has that eye of the tiger thing – all sports people do. They don’t like to be told they need to improve but they take it into their head and they do it,” Nicky explained.

Meanwhile, over the weekend it was revealed that DWTS is yet to be recommissioned by RTÉ for a second series.

Although a second series of the show is yet to be confirmed, Nicky would love to host it again.

“It’s not been confirmed yet but I’d love to do it. I’ve had the best fun over the last 12 weeks. It’s busy because I’ve been doing radio as well but no busier than in the Westlife years.

“I’m going to bring the kids out with Georgina and get back to Sunday lunches. I’m going to get back to the boys’ matches on a Saturday – we used to rehearse on Saturday so it was seven days a week for me.

“I’ve loved it but it’ll be nice to have my weekends back,” he added.

The Nicky Byrne Show: Behind The Scenes

A couple of weeks ago, Rachael Kane went to The Nicky Byrne Show studio to see how the magic happened. She shared a great article on Buzz.ie about her experience. Read it below:

“The beast has to be fed every day.” that’s how Zbyszek Zalinski describes his job as producer of 2FM’s The Nicky Byrne Show with Jenny Greene, going live across the nation for three hours every weekday and attracting a listenership of over 130,000. He, fellow producer Caroline Clarke (they alternate days), Lorraine Dunne (broadcast coordinator) and Amanda Fennelly (assistant producer) are the engine that drives the busy programme.

I went behind the scenes at RTE Radio Centre in Donnybrook to see what really happens on the show. In the pre-show production meeting, the team runs through what’s coming up over the following three hours. Although the broadcast is music heavy and banter filled, it still takes serious fodder to keep an audience satisfied. Then we head to the studio where the Breakfast Republic team (Jennifer Maguire, Bernard O’Shea and Keith Walsh) bail out and the next squad sit in their still warm seats. Seconds later, Nicky and Jenny are on air.
