Sunlight album review

Pip Ellwood-Hughes from Entertaiment Focus wrote a decent review about Nicky’s album, Sunlight. You can read his opinion below. What do you think about it? Is he right? Tell us on Twitter.

Launching a solo career after being part of a hugely successful band isn’t the easiest of things to get right. Nicky Byrne, who was once part of the chart-topping Irish band Westlife, has seen his former band mates experience varying degrees of success since the band decided to call it a day. Of the five original members, Shane Filan has had the most success as a solo artist but even he hasn’t come close to the huge success Westlife enjoyed over their career. Nicky is launching his bid for solo stardom to coincide with his Eurovision attempt, where he is representing Ireland.

Fun Questions with Nicky

So there have been a lot of new Nicky interviews lately, but it’s always nice to have interviewers spice things up a bit and ask random/different questions! Check these out:

1. In five words, how does it feel to be representing Ireland in the Eurovision?
Excited, proud, nervous, pressured and honoured.

2. What is your favourite Eurovision song ever, and why?
What a tough question! I love the big ones for Ireland, ‘Hold me now’ and ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Kids’. I do like ‘New Tomorrow’, the Danish entry from 2011 sung by Friend From London.

3. What is your favourite Westlife song ever, and why?
Again tough to pick one. ‘Flying Without Wings’ will be eternally remembered as a great song, but my overall fave is World of Our Own. Back in 2002 even lads stopped us in the street to say: “that’s a half decent song that ‘World of Yisserr Owen’. It always filled dancefloors at parties, and still does.

4. Who do you think is your biggest competition in this year’s Eurovision?
Well the favourite in the bookies is France, and it’s very good. But I like Spain and Malta.

5. Who would your ideal Eurovision supergroup include?
Great question! I’ve decided to form a boyband and it would consist of: The main man – Johnny Logan; second lead singer – Robbie Williams; the one that only gets to do lead vocals every fifth track, but is great to have in there for press – David ‘The Hoff’ Hasslehoff; the one everyone wants to be – Brad Pitt; and the goodlooking one who doesn’t sing – David Beckham. This supergroup would be unstoppable, now to find the right song!

6. Australia in the Eurovision. Discuss.
I like the idea of Oz being involved. They have watched for years and the country is full of Irish and British fans, as well as Europeans. I’d say we are slowly moving towards a World Vision Song Contest in the future!

7. Name five people, alive or dead, you’d love to have at a dinner party.
My Dad, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Roy Keane and Erika Eleniak.

8. Who would play you in the Hollywood movie of your life, and what would it be called?
Leonardo Di Caprio stars in Doing The Business.

9. If the world were ending tomorrow, what would you do today?
I’m on a plane at the minute so I’d land, I’d book a flight and go home to the family. I’d get a smoked haddock from Beshoff’s or Burdock’s, with mushy peas and loadsa salt ‘n’ vinegar. And sure if it the world was really ending, I’d go with curry sauce and onion rings too. With a Coca Cola.

10. The meaning of life according to Nicky.
I read somewhere once that life has a sting in the tail. We spend so long worrying about what we should do rather than doing it, and while we are pondering life, it jumps up bites us in the ass and we’re gone, well before we’re ready. It’s short, so go out there and dance!

Nicky on his Debut Album: “I Wanted to Deliver the Best Vocals I Can with Bags of Personality”

Last week, Nicky talked on the phone to Ellwood-Hughes from Entertainment Focus, where he discussed his debut album and Eurovision. Here are some of the highlights:

Nicky on Representing Ireland at Eurovision.
It’s a very proud honour to represent your country in anything. If you’re the chosen one this year to do it, you give it your best shot and you fly the flag. You just hope that you do your best and everyone is happy.

At the end of the day it’s a song contest not a singing contest. Obviously you have to be able to sing well and there’s plenty of singers in there better than others but it’s the song and the whole package. It’s a bit of everything thrown in there. We’re trying to show people that it’s OK for artists that have had different experiences in their career to go and do Eurovision.

Nicky on his music being different from Westlife’s.
I didn’t sit down and say ‘I want to do something way different here’. Westlife was me as well and I did love the songs. I’m not here going ‘this is what I really am’. Not at all. People didn’t know me as a lead singer apart from the hardcore Westlife fans who would have known the album tracks and seen me on many tours taking leads. I always found myself enjoying the tours the most because I like to be a bit of a showman and an entertainer. I love the big stage and I love the crowds. If you’re going to do an album then you need to do songs that are going to lend themselves well to those live arenas.

What I was trying to do was deliver an emotional vocal delivery and lyrics that people believed in.

What this album is as well is personality. I wanted to deliver the best vocals I can with bags of personality. I’ve always enjoyed a right good laugh and banter on stage, it was always my role in Westlife. I was the one that got people on the stage and you always want people to have fun and go home having enjoyed themselves. You do that by singing the songs but you also do that by doing things they don’t expect you to do. There was one night where there was a guy in the front row with his missus who didn’t want to be there. The front was jumping around and he as sat with his arms folded. We all saw him from the very first song and I thought ‘I’m going to have a laugh with this guy’. I got chatting to him, found out he was from Glasgow and his favourite band was Wet, Wet, Wet. We got him up on the big screens and got someone to get him a pint. We started singing Love Is All Around Us and all the crowd knew it. We put a smile on his face.

Life Lessons with Nicky Byrne

Nicky recently sat with The Weekend Magazine to reflect on his life and share some lessons he’s had along the way. It’s a very nice article, and it only makes me a prouder fan, so definitely check it out!

Massive thank you Kian Egan Web for sending the scans – click no them to full feature. Here are some of the highlights:

Nicky on his Family and becoming a dad.
“A young man always hopes that he’ll be lucky enough to become a dad. It was life-changing for me and I love it. I was always responsible, but we suddenly had to put the kids before ourselves and everything became about them.”

Nicky on his Football days.
“Playing football for Ireland as a teenager was amazing and it taught me an awful lot. You have to learn to lose as well as win. Everyone threw a big going-away party for me when I signed for Leeds United as a teenager, but I was back home within three years and I felt like a failure. That was probably one of the biggest challenges I’ve had in life.”

Nicky on what his parents taught him.
My dad taught me always to concentrate on the things you love. He told me to be honest with him and he would always have my back, and never to bring the Gardaí to the door. He also taught me that everything is mind over matter. My mam, Yvonne, taught me to be a human being and a gentleman. My sister Gillian, brother Adam and I were brought up in a very loving environment, and hopefully we have all served our parents well.

On The Cover of RTÉ Guide

Nicky is on the latest cover of RTÉ Guide Magazine, and he looks amazing (then again, doesn’t he always?) 😉 Make sure you get a copy!

He revealed he that missed being in the spotlight when Westlife came to an end.
“Only a chosen few get the opportunity to be in that position and I am very lucky to be among their number,” he told the RTE Guide. “We had 14 years and when it stopped, I didn’t miss it initially but after a while I did. It is like when a footballer or boxer who, when it all goes, looks back and thinks ‘Jeez I didn’t realise what I had’,” he explained.

Nicky is focussed on getting into the finals of the Eurovision this month.
“If I were to win the Song Contest that would be the biggest professional achievement of my life,” he admitted.

He also mentioned that his wife, Georgina, is his soulmate:
“We got together when we were 16 and now here we are three children later,” he said. “She is my soulmate: there is no other way of putting it. I am a family man first and foremost. I think it is simply down to how I was brought up,” he explained.
