Nicky Opens Up About His Upcoming Album

Nicky recently chatted to RSVP Magazine where he revealed that he would be willing to take some time off from radio, or to work around his job on 2fm, to tour his upcoming album which features his Eurovision single ‘Sunlight’.

“I wouldn’t be able to take months off the radio, certainly not, but we couldn’t probably arrange some live dates. That’s all pending on how well so many things do. That is the part I love the most. The thought of going live on stage and singing songs that I’ve written that would be a carrot to dangle in front of me. That would be awesome. Sitting down with a tour director, coming up with creative ideas, wow that would be incredible.”

Nicky also opened up about his upcoming album and revealed that it will probably be coming out in May (like previously mentioned).

“I’ve two songs still to record that we’ve co-written. Now I’m signed to Universal (in Ireland) I’m assuming it’ll be around Eurovision time, probably May, because I guess that makes sense”. But they might say they’ll go with the second single before releasing that. I’d imagine certainly before summer.

Nicky: “If Your Dreams Don’t Scare You, They’re Not Big Enough”

Nicky is on the cover of the latest VIP Magazine Issue, on newsstands now! He gave an amazing interview to Bianca about his upcoming debut album (apparently set to be released on May 6th), Eurovision prep and much more! Massive thank you to Judith for sharing the scans:

Bianca: Nicky Byrne doing the Eurovision. I have to admit, I’m a bit surprised.
Nicky: Truth is, I’m really patriotic, and that’s not just a line. I love when Conor McGregor fights, love when Ireland plays football and I grew up watching the Eurovision. I am also a very competitive person. When I finished playing football at 19, and then Westlife started, I did lose that competitive side that I craved. I don’t know if we’ll ever win the Eurovision again, but sure look, we’ll give it a shot.

Irish Daily Mail on Sunday: Nicky Talks About Being a ‘Family Man’

I added a scan of today’s The Irish Daily Mail on Sunday article featuring Nicky. Danny McElhinney interviewed Nicky about Eurovision, his upcoming album, being a family man and missing his dad. Click on the picture below to read it:

Nicky’s debut album is complete and is set for release around the time of his Eurovision date. He describes the record as ‘a cheeky pop-rock album’. “Think of Robbie Williams and Ollie Murs,” he says.

He doesn’t term himself as a ‘singer’ or ‘broadcaster’ but as ‘a family man’. That strong sense of family, he says, has been instilled in him since childhood. “My father passed on his two great loves to me; football and music. The proudest moment in my life, and I still say this, is playing for Ireland U-18s at a tournament in Portugal,” he says. “I felt like I was playing in a World Cup final. Unfortunately my mum and dad weren’t able to travel to see it. I remember tears rolling down my face as they played Amhrán na bhFiann. I made my debut in a match in Switzerland, we won 4-0 and Damien Duff was playing.”

“My dad did see me playing for Ireland in Northern Ireland though. He didn’t live to see the end of Westlife but he saw the best of us. I don’t go to Mass but I have a faith. I carry a little stone from his grave at all the big events in my life. I feel he is there.”

Nicky Reveals His Lucky Charm For Performances

Nicky told The Irish Sun that he carries a rock from his dad’s grave every time he performs.

“In the Westlife years I used to always have lucky socks. What I do now, I always take a little stone from my dad’s grave and have it in my pocket.” he said. “My dad was a big inspiration. His two things were football and music, which I ended up going on to do. This year it just feels like it all came together.”

And he reckons his dad would be proud, adding: “Loads of people who my dad would have known have stopped me in the street, Facebooked me, tweeted me and said: ‘Your dad would be so proud.’ That makes me smile.”

I’m positive Nicky’s dad would very proud to see all he’s done in the last couple of years. Nicky’s an extraordinary person who’s now representing Ireland at Eurovision, has just released his debut single and performed by himself for the very first time last night. It truly doesn’t get better than that. 🙂

Nicky also chatted to Goss.ie about the importance of a good song at Eurovision & performing in the semi-finals:

“I have massive nerves. Everything is so live, that’s the rules of Eurovision, you can’t even have a backing vocal track at all, the punter sitting down watching Eurovision doesn’t pay attention to all of that but that’s the reality of it. It’s a song contest so if the song it is, and you hope it is, you just have to deliver the live vocal,” he explained. “Whether we’ve the best song or not God knows. But the difficulty is getting out of the semi-final. That’s the hard part. And if we do that then we’re in,” he added.

“The opportunity to do this for anybody, nobody should ever turn it down if they’re that lucky. You listen to criticism but you do your best and you know that anybody out there, if they got the opportunity, they would all do it.”

Nicky On The Cover of Irish Daily Mail’s Weekend Magazine

Nicky is on the cover of today’s Irish Daily Mail’s Weekend magazine! For those who don’t live in Ireland and can’t read the article anywhere, I uploaded the pictures to the Gallery. Click on them to see their full size:

Here are some of the highlights from the interview. Really worth the read!

On finding his sound and ‘wow-ing’ people:

“When I went to write a solo album I even surprised myself. Ronan Hardiman deserves a lot of credit because he instilled a lot of confidence in me when I got to the songwriting process. He couldn’t believe my tone and he told me that I had a real sweet spot in my voice that was best in a certain range and we tried to capitalise on that and he believed that we would shock a lot of people and hopefully we have.”

On his upcoming Eurovision performance:

“It does need a big performance and we have Lee Lodge on board who has produced the Grammys and VMAs as well as One Direction concerts so hopefully he will dream up something incredible and I can deliver it on the night. Right now we are assembling five backing singers to create the performance and they have to be brilliant.”

On his former Westlife bandmates and their reaction to the news:

“We are brothers and we never lost that bond so we are all doing really well in our own fields. I am sure they all went, ‘holy s**t, what is he doing?’ but then they saw the song and the video and got what I was doing. They have all worked with Wayne and they are very musical and they probably got it and went, ‘Only Nicky would do something like this…’.”

On the Eurovision results:

“The pressure is huge. Don’t get me wrong at the end of the day it is me standing on the stage and I am under no illusions as to what could happen. I thought long and hard about it because everything is going so well, radio is flying, I’m really happy at home and the kids are in school and healthy and happy. Why do you want to put yourself up to this? But life is short, I know it is a decent song and I am a fighter. I am very Irish and I don’t want to see us not qualify. That doesn’t mean I will guarantee that but I will do all the Press and promotion and do the video and call on the biggest names to mix it and if we fall short it won’t be for lack of effort.”

On his family and Georgina’s support throughout his career:

“If I qualify we will all want to be in the same country on the one night. So whatever happens I will be able to go and give them a hug in Stockholm. I’m guessing I will be away doing promo in early May so I will miss Georgina’s birthday, which won’t be ideal. Look, if there was a Golden Globe for best supporting wife she would win it hands down. She has stood by and supported me through Westlife, Strictly, the football career before that – and now Eurovision. When I first considered this I went to her, she just said ‘If you think you can do this then go and do it. Why would you let your fear stop you if you think you can do it?’ And that is just how amazing she is.”

Nicky Reveals More Details on His Debut Solo Album

A new article from today’s The Irish Sun has new information on Nicky’s debut solo album, like its working title: Kissing In Car Parks.

He has co-written with Wayne Hector, who penned the band’s chart-toppers Swear It Again and Flying Without Wings, and Irish writer Don Mescall, who gave Aslan their hit Too Late For Hallelujah. Ronan Hardiman will be the album’s producer.

Nicky said: “When you get in and write it yourself (an album) and not part of a band like Westlife, it is actually you. It’s your personality and your songs, your writing — it’s all you. To have Ronan Hardiman, one of the best producers in this country, to help me along with the best songwriters Don and Wayne. I’m so proud of it.”

Nicky has been working on his solo record for the past three years! But, what does this all mean for his radio show, The Nicky Byrne Show?

“When I first started in RTE, I talked to Dan Healy (Head of 2FM) and the first thing I told him was I was six or seven songs into an album I am hoping to release. Dan fully understood that, and said he fully understood that. He told me, he said, ‘When the time is right we will look at that.’”

Nicky’s biggest priority remains his wife Georgina, and his kids Rocco, Jay and Gia:

“First and foremost, I’m a husband and a father of three kids, two of which are in school. I’m enjoying that most of all. They are older now and playing football, or doing hobbies — so if a song or album took off, the first priority is my family. I’m going to be in Ireland. I would be busy jumping on planes coming back to do radio, and be a daddy and a husband.”

Last but not least, what is his opinion on the recent rumours of him representing Ireland at Eurovision this year?

“If that opportunity arose for me, I would love it because I am very patriotic.”
