We all know Sunlight is a brilliant tune, and it’s absolutely perfect for Eurovision – It’s catchy, it’s fun, it’s uplifting! It makes you want to blast it in your car, roll down the windows and dance along.
So what’s next? We have to get the word out there about Nicky’s first song as a solo artist. Yes, basically all of Ireland has heard last week’s amazing news, but let’s make sure it gets the airplay time it deserves! How do we do that? Simple:
Listen to your local radio stations.
Look them up on twitter.
Send them a tweet asking them to play: ‘Sunlight’ by Nicky Byrne.
Nicky is on the cover of today’s Irish Daily Mail’s Weekend magazine! For those who don’t live in Ireland and can’t read the article anywhere, I uploaded the pictures to the Gallery. Click on them to see their full size:
Here are some of the highlights from the interview. Really worth the read!
On finding his sound and ‘wow-ing’ people:
“When I went to write a solo album I even surprised myself. Ronan Hardiman deserves a lot of credit because he instilled a lot of confidence in me when I got to the songwriting process. He couldn’t believe my tone and he told me that I had a real sweet spot in my voice that was best in a certain range and we tried to capitalise on that and he believed that we would shock a lot of people and hopefully we have.”
On his upcoming Eurovision performance:
“It does need a big performance and we have Lee Lodge on board who has produced the Grammys and VMAs as well as One Direction concerts so hopefully he will dream up something incredible and I can deliver it on the night. Right now we are assembling five backing singers to create the performance and they have to be brilliant.”
On his former Westlife bandmates and their reaction to the news:
“We are brothers and we never lost that bond so we are all doing really well in our own fields. I am sure they all went, ‘holy s**t, what is he doing?’ but then they saw the song and the video and got what I was doing. They have all worked with Wayne and they are very musical and they probably got it and went, ‘Only Nicky would do something like this…’.”
On the Eurovision results:
“The pressure is huge. Don’t get me wrong at the end of the day it is me standing on the stage and I am under no illusions as to what could happen. I thought long and hard about it because everything is going so well, radio is flying, I’m really happy at home and the kids are in school and healthy and happy. Why do you want to put yourself up to this? But life is short, I know it is a decent song and I am a fighter. I am very Irish and I don’t want to see us not qualify. That doesn’t mean I will guarantee that but I will do all the Press and promotion and do the video and call on the biggest names to mix it and if we fall short it won’t be for lack of effort.”
On his family and Georgina’s support throughout his career:
“If I qualify we will all want to be in the same country on the one night. So whatever happens I will be able to go and give them a hug in Stockholm. I’m guessing I will be away doing promo in early May so I will miss Georgina’s birthday, which won’t be ideal. Look, if there was a Golden Globe for best supporting wife she would win it hands down. She has stood by and supported me through Westlife, Strictly, the football career before that – and now Eurovision. When I first considered this I went to her, she just said ‘If you think you can do this then go and do it. Why would you let your fear stop you if you think you can do it?’ And that is just how amazing she is.”
Nicky’s lyric video for his new song ‘Sunlight’ has reached over 103,000 views on RTÉ’s YouTube Channel! If we add the views from that video and the one Nicky uploaded on his Official YouTube Account, the song has more than 170,000 plays in only 3 days! Well done, Nicky!
As you know, two days ago Nicky had an extremely busy day because news came out that he will be representing Ireland at the 2016 Eurovision song competition in Stockholm. RTÉ held a special event at the Morrison Hotel where Nicky talked to the press.
Here I have 7 EXCLUSIVE High Quality pictures of Nicky. Massive thank you to hermionegranger for sending them in:
Nicky told the Irish Sun that believes his late dad could be guiding his Eurovision bid. Nikki Byrne Sr was a major fan of the contest and would host Eurovision nights at Baldoyle Racecourse, where he performed in a cabaret band.
“My dad is six years dead this November but I sometimes wonder are the stars aligned this year? Because my dad was such a fan of Eurovision, he would love this. I actually feel he was in the room when we wrote the song that would be our Eurovision entry Sunlight.”
“Dad saw my career with Westlife go through the roof but he didn’t hear me on 2FM or hear my first solo album. But I still feel him very much around.”
Nicky also chatted to Goos.ie about his plans to promote his album in the future, and how his family will always come first:
“I’d love to promote the album but first and foremost I’m a dad, I’m a husband and I’m not going to be jumping on a tour for months on end,” he explained. “I’m not going to do that anymore but I’ll certainly promote the album and give it my best shot. You know I’m 37, I’m not Niall Horan, I’ve done that, I’ve worn that jersey being months on end when you haven’t been home and I loved it,” he revealed. “But it’s a young man’s game to do that and that’s not me when you have kids in school, playing their football and hobbies.”
More congratulations are in order because Nicky just revealed on RTÉ Today that he officially has a record deal with Universal Music Ireland!
Nicky has been working on his music for two years now and hearing this makes me more proud than I already was. So happy that all his hard work is paying off. Looking forward to its most anticipated release later this year!
Here’s his interview on RTÉ Today, where he shared the exciting news:
Nicky was at the Morrison Hotel where RTÉ announced that he will be representing Ireland at Eurovision this year. He mentioned his album plans:
“I’ve written this album over the past few years and it was always going to come out in 2016.” Nicky said. “We’re talking to a label at the moment and I think a deal usually comes off the back of a single and I think Sunlight is the song to do that, it just happens to also be Ireland’s entry to the Eurovision. Hopefully the album will come out later this year but right now I’m riding the crest of this wave of Eurovision.”
Nicky also decided not to receive a fee from his Eurovision performances and instead has requested his payment to go back into the production costs.
“It’s an honour to represent my country and it makes sense to me to put that money into the performance so it can look better,” he added.
Nicky mentioned to Goss.ie that he sent the song to his former Westlife bandmates before making today’s announcements:
“I haven’t asked them for advice but I’ve texted them all last night with the song and video, told them it was true and wanted them to hear from me first,” he explained. “I rang Louis as well obviously, every one of them text and were really positive, ‘love the song, love the video, very catchy, you can do it’.”
“Kian sent a lovely text saying, ‘I got your back, you can do it’, Mark’s going ‘this makes me so happy, the song, the Eurovision, you. At last you’re doing something you’ve really wanted to do’,” he smiled. “I think Shane’s in Dubai at the minute and he said ‘I loved the song, fair play, what do you have to lose’.”
It’s just been confirmed by RTÉ that Nicky will be representing Ireland at the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest in Stockholm! This are massive news, since is the longest-running annual TV song competition of the year with over 120 million viewers around the world. This is a huge platform for Nicky and it could launch his solo career in a big way!
“The Eurovision is a TV show and song contest like no other and for the past three years my Eurovision experience has gotten better and my affiliation grown stronger, as I have proudly delivered the Irish votes live from Dublin.” Nicky said. “This year I go one step further, and actually walk on that stage to represent my country, I am honoured RTÉ have chosen me and believe in this song like I do.”
Don’t think this could get any better? Continue reading: Nicky’s song for Eurovision has just been released and it’s called “Sunlight”! It was co-written by Nicky himself, renowned songwriter Wayne Hector and award-winning composer Ronan Hardiman. Watch the lyric video now and listen to the incredible song:
“I’m absolutely over the moon. I really am. To be given the opportunity to represent our country is huge,” Nicky told RTÉ News. “I’m really looking forward to it… We have what we feel is a really catchy, kind of pop/soft rock song. It isn’t a ballad, it’s a very up tempo song, it is very radio friendly.”
Nicky will perform in the Eurovision Semi-Final in the Globe Arena in Stockholm on either Tuesday 10 or Thursday 12 May, to qualify for a place in the Final on Saturday, May 14. The draw to decide which Semi-Final Ireland is to perform in will take place at the end of January.
“I also look forward to re-visiting Sweden, a country where we had so much success with Westlife over the years and I can’t wait to be a part of what I’m sure will be an amazing show in Stockholm. Ireland, I will give it my best shot. Sweden… here we come.”
Nicky has also enlisted the help of Tim Byrne, former Creative Director of Simon Cowell’s company Syco Entertainment. He will lead a team featuring Lee Lodge whose production credits include the 2015 Oscars and MTV Music Video Awards. Nicky will perform the new song live on The Ray D’Arcy Show on February 13 for the first time.
We’re super proud of our Nicky, and cannot wait to show our full support on this amazing new journey! The surprise and excitement of listening to Sunlight way earlier than expected is just incomparable. It’s his turn to show the world his talent as a solo artist!
