Nicky Byrne: ‘I was insecure with my teeth during Westlife days’

Nicky Byrne has admitted he had self-esteem issues during Westlife’s heyday – and that Tom Cruise inspired him to get his teeth fixed.

The ‘Flying Without Wings’ singer spoke about anxieties over appearance on ITV’s Good Morning Britain as part of its #SelfieEsteem campaign that aims to boost confidence.

Nicky said self-esteem can affect males just as much as females, pointing out his own experience as part of Westlife.

“In those kind of crazy Westlife years it is something that you can’t avoid, you see yourselves everywhere on magazine covers, on TV regularly and then you know you kind of think, ‘I need to do that, I need to change, I need to train a little bit’,” he recalled.

“It’s kind of unavoidable and I think people probably see it as a female thing predominantly and it’s not really, I think guys do have those insecurities as well.”

Nicky went on to say his teeth caused him self-esteem issues, particularly when manager Louis Walsh suggested he have them fixed.

“I remember the early days it was my teeth that were all over the place. It’s lads banter amongst yourselves when people are saying ‘ah your teeth are this’… it’s a bit of banter. But Louis used to always say to me ‘you’ve got to get your teeth done, you’ve got to get your teeth done’ and I suppose that resonated with me then and I went and got a brace.

“In the midst of the Westlife fame I saw Tom Cruise on one of the red carpets wearing the white train track braces and I thought, you know what? If the biggest star in the world can go and do that then why not. A lot of the Westlife earlier years I would have smiled with my mouth closed while the rest of the boys were blinging teeth.

Westlife’s Nicky Byrne reveals Louis Walsh bullied him over his bad teeth

nicky001

Nicky Byrne has revealed he used to get grief for his wonky teeth – with Louis Walsh urging him to get his gnashers fixed.

The former Westlife star admitted his teeth ‘were all over the place’ when the band started out, with Walsh’s nagging ultimately persuading him to get a brace.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain, he said it was a ‘very blokey thing’ to not be concerned about your appearance, but said that he thought ‘we all care deep down’.

He explained: ‘You’re in a boyband you’re going to be vain. But I remember the early days it was … that my teeth were all over the place…

‘Louis used to always say to me “You’ve got to get your teeth done, you’ve got to get your teeth done” and I suppose that resonated with me then and I went and got a brace.

‘In those kind of crazy Westlife years, it is something that you can’t avoid – you see yourselves everywhere on magazine covers, on TV regularly and then you know you kind of think “I need to do that, I need to change, I need to train a little bit”.’

Byrne was talking to Good Morning Britain as part of the show’s selfie campaign, which urges viewers to share the first selfie they take, unfiltered, on social media with the hashtag #SelfieEsteem.

Nicky Byrne DENIES Westlife reunion – after reports Simon Cowell is bringing them back together

Nicky said he’s too busy focusing on his solo album.

Nicky Byrne has said Westlife will not be reuniting despite rumours the band were getting back together.
Today the Sun had reported that Westlife were making a return next year, with Brian McFadden on board for a reunion tour and new album.
But speaking to Ryan Tubridy this morning on 2FM, Nicky said there is no reunion on the cards.
“It is not true. I don’t know where it’s come from,” he said.

“I would usually suggest that Louis dropped this story to keep Westlife relevant but it’s probably not Louis because it came from Dan Wooton in the English Sun.
“I genuinely hands on my heart, none of the boys have spoken to each other and we’ve no plans to do any reunion,” he said.
Nicky said all of the band members are too busy with their own careers to be even thinking about a Westlife return.
“Loads of reasons. It’s far too soon, we’re all making rail roads in our own careers,” he said.

“From a personal point of view I’m loving what I’m doing, I’m planning some TV work, I’m also recording my own album in my own time.
“This has definitely come way out of the blue, it’s not true,” he admitted.
“I’ve been writing for the last couple of months with Don Mescall and Wayne Hector, Wayne wrote Flying Without Wings and Swear It Again.
“No deals on that, it’s just when you’re in studio you’re writing it all yourself, that really is for the first time,” he added.
