Nicky Byrne: ‘Westlife success down to You Raise Me Up’

Westlife were on the verge of splitting in the mid-2000s – until they agreed to record single You Raise Me Up after years of snubbing the track, according to Nicky Byrne.

The singer admits the four piece didn’t know how to spot a hit, and continually turned down the Secret Garden tune.

Westlife came close to parting ways in 2005 but Simon Cowell and Louis Walsh eventually convinced them to record the track – and their fortunes turned around.

Writer Nicky Byrne is a hit with Cecelia Ahern

POP hunk Nicky Byrne is writing a song for his author sister-in-law Cecelia Ahern for an upcoming project.

PS I Love You scribe Cecelia (31) has a number of projects on the go, such as upcoming flick Love Rosie.

And ex-Westlife star Nicky (34) — married to her sister Georgina — is using his musical skills for a screen adaptation of her work.

A source close to Nicky revealed: “He was approached by the production team and he came up with a song in London.

“He wrote it with Wayne Hector, who wrote a lot of Westlife’s greatest songs.

“The team is confident they’ve come up with a killer song.”

The source added: “But it still needs to cross a number of bridges before it’s given the thumbs up from Cecelia’s camp.”

The project is Nicky’s first foray into songwriting and the first time he has worked with Cecelia.

Nicky in no hurry to tread boards

He’s out to conquer the world of television, but you’ll be waiting a long time before you see singer-turned-presenter Nicky Byrne acting.

The father of two told The Diary that he “doesn’t want to chase a dream” at this stage in his life.

“I did a brief acting course in New York years ago, but for me it’s a confidence thing,” he said.

Nicky has become the new co-host of RTÉ six-part series The Hit, alongside Aidan Power, which will air next month.

“This is exactly where I want to be right now, and the fact that it’s presenting and music combined is perfect,” said Nicky.

Music-based formats seem to be ruling the roost in RTÉ at the moment, with Liam McKenna currently filming Music Inc for RTÉ Two, which is due in the autumn.

“We’ve been filming for a few months now and it’s going pretty well. The show is a little bit like The Apprentice, but for this industry,” Liam said.

“We’ve taken 10 transition-year students and they’re all competing to win a job working with me on tour. They’re set a challenge each week by a celebrity and each week one is eliminated.”

So far they have designed costumes for Tulisa, performed a remix of The Saturdays and shot a video for the X Factor finalists.

Former Westlife star Nicky Byrne, who recently sat in for Ryan Tubridy on his morning RTÉ 2fm show, has said that he would love to present more radio.

When asked if he would present a regular show on 2fm if he was offered a slot, he said: “Who knows. It’s a huge commitment. I’ve met people in the UK and I’m waiting on things to come off and TV is where I’d love to be both here and across the water.

“I always want to live here but it would be silly of me to ignore the fact that Westlife have a fan base in the UK as well but…if they [2fm] were serious about it, it would be hard not to listen to that option and that opportunity to be honest.”

Former Westlife star Nicky Byrne and TV presenter Aidan Power will present a brand new six-part TV series, The Hit on RTÉ.

The new talent show will air in July and unlike other shows where the focus is on the singers, in The Hit songwriters will take centre stage when the show goes live in Dublin’s O2.

Speaking about the show, Byrne said: “My Friday nights will have a whole new twist!

“I’m really looking forward to seeing what Irish songwriters have to offer. And I’m also eager to get back on the 02 stage – where I’ve enjoyed so many great shows in the past. But this one will be a whole new ball game!”

Power added: “I’m very excited to be involved in The Hit and I can’t wait for the live shows in the 02 and to work with Nicky.

“This series brings together Irelands best songwriters and artists to work together and I know it will make gripping viewing.”

Audience tickets for The Hit will be available to buy shortly.

The show, which originated in RTÉ’s Format Farm project, will see songwriters pitch their songs to two established music stars over five weeks, in the hope that they will pick their song.

In the final week, the five songs will be performed before the winning show, The Hit, is chosen.

The show will feature five-time Grammy-award winning producer Steve Lillywhite who will be tasked with picking the songs before they are pitched to the performers.

Ultimately though the audience will decide as the final two songs each week are available for download and the one with the most downloads secures a place in the final.
