Nicky Byrne, Aidan Power present The Hit

Former Westlife star Nicky Byrne and TV presenter Aidan Power will present a brand new six-part TV series, The Hit on RTÉ.

Former Westlife star Nicky Byrne and TV presenter Aidan Power will present a brand new six-part TV series, The Hit on RTÉ.

The new talent show will air in July and unlike other shows where the focus is on the singers, in The Hit songwriters will take centre stage when the show goes live in Dublin’s O2.

Speaking about the show, Byrne said: “My Friday nights will have a whole new twist!

“I’m really looking forward to seeing what Irish songwriters have to offer. And I’m also eager to get back on the 02 stage – where I’ve enjoyed so many great shows in the past. But this one will be a whole new ball game!”

Power added: “I’m very excited to be involved in The Hit and I can’t wait for the live shows in the 02 and to work with Nicky.

“This series brings together Irelands best songwriters and artists to work together and I know it will make gripping viewing.”

Audience tickets for The Hit will be available to buy shortly.

The show, which originated in RTÉ’s Format Farm project, will see songwriters pitch their songs to two established music stars over five weeks, in the hope that they will pick their song.

In the final week, the five songs will be performed before the winning show, The Hit, is chosen.

The show will feature five-time Grammy-award winning producer Steve Lillywhite who will be tasked with picking the songs before they are pitched to the performers.

Ultimately though the audience will decide as the final two songs each week are available for download and the one with the most downloads secures a place in the final.

Nicky on a high note as he pens song in solo move

HE HAS just signed up to front a TV show but former Westlife star Nicky Byrne is harbouring secret plans to go solo.

The ex-popstar has spent several days penning a new music track in the UK, the Herald can reveal.

From covering for Ryan Tubridy on 2fm to co-hosting the summer’s big music show The Hit, Byrne is hot property right now.

But the 34-year-old, who will welcome his third child with wife Georgina later this year, has found time to put pen to paper on a potential future hit of his own.

VOCALS

“I was over in the UK for two days songwriting for a particular project, which went far greater than I could have imagined,” Nicky said.

“Even if it does nothing, it’s a song that somebody else could do for something else, it’s that good – I’m very happy with it.”

And Nicky could even be following in the footsteps of former band mate Shane Filan by adding his own vocals to the track.

“Depending on how it goes, if they’re into it, I’d say I’ll probably do it myself or duet.

“It would be a female duet, I would imagine, but it’s very early days,” he added.
