Westlife Call Boy-Band Breakup ‘Strange’

After 14 years together, ‘It just hits you that you keep telling yourself that we are not going to do this again,’ Nicky Byrne tells MTV News.

With more than 45 million albums sold worldwide, 14 #1 singles in the United Kingdom and 10 studio albums, fans of Irish boy band Westlife are still in shock that, after 14 years together, the members decided last month to go their separate ways.

Yet, Westlife did not go quietly, having one of their most successful years to date. In May, they were crowned champions of MTV News’ Battle of the Boy Bands. Following two weeks of intense matchups and more than 12 million votes, Westlife beat out music’s most-famous boy bands to take home the coveted trophy, which is now in their possession.

“Thank you very much. We were very proud, what an amazing thing to win,” Westlife member Nicky Byrne said to MTV News via Skype. “It was really really special. It’s sitting proudly now in my trophy cabinet amongst a few others we were lucky enough to win.”

Last month, Westlife concluded their 12th and final concert tour, the Greatest Hits Tour. Traveling through Asia and Europe, the group celebrated their remarkable career with their fans, ending the trek with a homecoming concert in front of 85,000 fans in Dublin.

“It was a long tour: We did the whole U.K. and wrapped it up in Ireland,” Byrne said. “It was the best way we could have expected or wanted to finish. It was two nights in a huge stadium, 85,000 and typical Irish crowd. One night, it rained, and one night, it was sunny, but it didn’t dampen any spirits. It was emotional, it was real adrenaline, it was a great night all around.”

And even though it’s been a few weeks since the tour has wrapped, Byrne admits that it has yet to set in that he will no longer be a part of Westlife.

“It’s a bit strange still, obviously. We were together for 14 years. We did a lot of long tours and big tours,” he shared. “At the moment, it feels a little bit the same — that you have just wrapped up a big, long tour and you’re on time out, but I think every night going to bed or when I wake up first thing in the morning, it just hits you that you keep telling yourself that we are not going to do this again, I’m not going to be back recording with the lads. It’s just strange. That’s the best way to explain it.”

Unfortunately for all those Westlife fans, there was no discussion on the road of getting back together, even if it might have crossed their minds.

“Definitely through the tour, different crowds, different cities, there were times mentally in your head you went and said, ‘Is this the right thing?’ We never really spoke, that was the funny thing: We never really talked to each other and said, ‘Have we made the right decision?’ I think our egos wouldn’t allow that,” he said. “So it was strange when we made the decision, which was probably coming for maybe two years on and off, we felt it, and then once the decision was made, that’s the decision now, there’s no going back.”

Nicky Byrne has a Byrne-ing ambition for TV gig

Westlife star Nicky Byrne wants to host huge telly shows such as X Factor or American Idol now the band have hung up their boots.

Nicky revealed his plan even though Westlife’s finale hasn’t sunk in yet.

“Right now I’m looking at Ryan Seacrest and Dermot O’Leary and I love what they’re doing,” added Nicky. “Big TV shows, that is definitely where I would love to be.”

However, he admitted he is still getting to grips with the fact that his career in Westlife is over.

“It really hasn’t sunk in yet,” he said. “I keep telling myself it’s really the start of my career and my life and all the rest but every day I wake up and I think to myself ‘It’s time to do something new’.”

He admitted he has no real interest in following his band mates Mark Feehily and Shane Filan and embarking on a solo career in the music business. “I definitely wasn’t the lead singer in Westlife,” he said. “I think Mark and Shane will have brilliant solo careers. I have no interest at all in managing other bands or anything like that. But I’ll never rule out a single somewhere in the right place at the right time.”

However, he admitted he doesn’t want to tarnish the memory of the band’s success. “I did 14 great years and I’d never want to look back on something and think, ‘I tried this and it didn’t work’.” he said. “I have no regrets, none of us have. I think what I’ll miss is standing on that stage looking out at the fans. I can never replace that. No matter what I do, that will never be replaced.”

Nicky, who has in the past presented shows on 2FM said: “Radio stations especially in Ireland say they would love to get me on. I would love to do something in radio, but what exactly, I’ve no idea. Priority-wise, TV is really where I want to be.

And The Voice of Ireland host Kathryn Thomas had better watch out, as Nicky says his ultimate job would be a presenting a talent show in Ireland

“Shiny floor, prime time, your Dermot O’Learys, Ryan Seacrest of this world – I do look at them with a bit of envy and think I’d love to do a job like that, presenting a big, big show.

“Right now it’s loads of meetings – I’ve met with the guys from ITV, I’ve met with the guys from BBC, I’ve met with RTE and loads of different people like that.

“Meetings are meetings – they excite me but at the end of the day you have to turn them into something in stone. Until that day comes they are just meetings.”

Are you going on tour again, Da?

Family man … Nicky can now focus on his wife and twin sons

POP hunk Nicky Byrne’s kids still can’t believe he’s finally off the road and HOME for good.

The former Westlife star was popping out to the shops when his twins Jay and Rocco met him at the door and demanded: “Are you going on tour again, Daddy?”

The lads — like their old man — can’t believe Westlife are really finished.

A thing of the past … Westlife on stage

Nicky, 33, said he “couldn’t be any happier” after the chart-toppers bowed out in spectacular style with a series of sold-out shows at Croke Park last month.
And speaking to the Irish Sun as he made his first post-split appearance alongside gorgeous wife Georgina, Byrne explained that it would take “a good few months” before it would start to sink in.

He smiled: “People have been asking are the kids delighted to have me home — but the thing is, after every Westlife tour we’d always have time off, and they often came on the road with us so I was never away from them that long.

“The concerts were incredible, absolutely amazing and something we’ll never forget.

“It was a chance for us to say thanks to the fans as much as anything else, because they’ve been with us since day one.

“It still hasn’t really sunk in because it just feels like the end of a tour. I suppose it might be six months down the line before it hits home.

“But it’s funny. I was going out during the week to do some errands and they asked, ‘Are you going out on tour again daddy?’, so it obviously hasn’t dawned on them yet. We won’t really appreciate it until it’s been a while.”
Georgina laughed: “He’s right, it’s been nice having him home but it just feels like an extended break, rather than the end of the band. It’ll take some getting used to.”

Nicky and Georgina were speaking at the launch of new women’s website,, which has signed up Byrne’s stunning missus as a columnist.

The professional fitness trainer has agreed to dish all on the latest fashion and fitness tips.

A sister website to Jerry Flannery’s, contributors will include Today FM’s Mairead Farrell, MTV babe Laura Whitmore and RTE’s Evanne Ni Chuilinn.

Georgina told us: “I’m really looking forward to it. has been a huge success and it’s great that now there’ll be site like this for women.”
